Vietnamese translations offer no particular
issues or difficulties to a professional Vietnamese translator,
neither for Vietnamese to English translation, nor for English
to Vietnamese translation. Nevertheless, as with all Asian languages
the differences between Eastern and Western traditions, thought
and culture do create challenges when dealing with certain concepts
and subject areas. Experienced Vietnamese-English translators
are skilled at overcoming these difficulties.
The Vietnamese alphabet is based on the Latin
alphabet with the addition of nine accent marks or diacritics.
The many diacritics, often two on the same letter, make written
Vietnamese easily recognizable.
Vietnamese translations supplied as Microsoft Office documents
– Word, Excel, PowerPoint – should display correctly
on almost any computer providing standard Unicode fonts are
used.
However Vietnamese is also frequently keyboarded using specifically
designed Vietnamese fonts and input methods, and documents created
this way will only display correctly when the fonts used are
installed on the computer viewing the file.
It is common to supply Vietnamese translations created in Microsoft
Office applications as pdf files to assist users unfamiliar
with the language and avoid any possible font issues.
Vietnamese Typesetting
Vietnamese can be typeset as raw text in all major graphic design
programs on Mac and PC using Unicode fonts. Artwork is usually
delivered with the Vietnamese text outlined to curves.
There are no particular difficulties involved in typesetting Vietnamese,
although space issues can arise as Vietnamese translations can
sometimes be a little longer than the original English text.
As Vietnamese uses an amended Latin alphabet, typesetting Vietnamese involves much the same font selection and layout considerations as apply for English artwork. Where we are working with an existing English graphic design file, either the same fonts or fonts of similar appearances can generally be used for the Vietnamese translation.
